Newcastle Suburbs Guide: Finding the Right Neighbourhood

Newcastle's suburbs each have a distinct feel. Cooks Hill and The Junction in the inner west are the cafe and restaurant hubs, with Darby Street and King Street as the main strips. Hamilton, further inland, has a strong heritage streetscape and a lively Saturday market on Beaumont Street. Islington and Mayfield are inner-north options with older housing stock and a slower pace of gentrification. The beachside suburbs of Merewether, Bar Beach and Corlette are popular but expensive. Across the Hunter River, Stockton is a surf beach suburb reached by a short ferry and offers more affordable homes in a low-density setting. Lake Macquarie suburbs to the south, including Belmont, Warners Bay and Toronto, offer a waterside lifestyle at a lower price point than the inner Newcastle suburbs.
