Free Things to Do in Newcastle: Coast, Culture and History

Newcastle is generous with free activities. The coastal walk from Nobby's Beach to Merewether is free and one of the best urban coastal walks in Australia. Fort Scratchley on the headland above Nobby's Beach is a maritime museum and intact WWII gun emplacement open for free on many days. Newcastle Museum in the former rail yards on Honeysuckle is free to enter and covers the city's industrial history including BHP steelworks. The city beach ocean pools (Merewether and Newcastle) are free to use. Foreshore walks along the Hunter River and Newcastle Harbour, Blackbutt Reserve in Kotara (free wildlife park), and the weekly Olive Tree Market at Civic Park round out the accessible cost-free options.
