Hiking and Walking Trails Near Newcastle: The Bathers Way, Watagan and Beyond

Newcastle and the Hunter region have a strong walking and hiking network across their coastal, lake and escarpment geography. The Bathers Way coastal walk from Nobby's Head to Merewether Beach is the most popular urban walking route, covering approximately 4 kilometres along clifftops, beaches and rock platforms with outstanding ocean views. Glenrock State Conservation Area in Whitebridge has mountain bike and walking trails through dry sclerophyll bushland. The Watagans National Park in the Upper Hunter, about 70 kilometres from the city, has the Heaton State Forest trail network. The Pokolbin ranges in the Hunter Valley wine country have walking tracks through wine estate landscapes. Lake Macquarie's foreshore walking paths cover significant distances across the lake's perimeter. The Barrington Tops National Park, about 2.5 hours northwest, is one of NSW's best wilderness hiking destinations accessible as an overnight trip from Newcastle. The Hunter Wetlands National Park has boardwalk and flat trail walking through significant waterbird habitat.
