Newcastle offers eight free activities centred on its beaches, coastal walks and public street art this month.

Winter visitor numbers at local beaches have risen sharply since the June school holidays began, giving residents a low-cost way to fill weekends without paid attractions. Families report turning to these spots as entry fees at nearby paid venues climb above $15 per person.

The Bathers Way coastal walk starts at Newcastle Beach and runs 5 kilometres south past Merewether Beach, passing changing facilities and public barbecues at both ends. Street art tours can begin at the Hunter Street laneways where murals by local crews cover entire building sides near Darby Street.

City of Newcastle data shows 1.2 million people used the Bathers Way path in the 2025 financial year, with peak daily counts exceeding 4,000 on weekends. Free parking remains available along Shortland Esplanade until 10am most days.

Beaches and walks

Nobbys Beach offers flat sand access and a short climb to the lighthouse viewpoint without any gate fees. The adjacent Newcastle Ocean Baths provide a sheltered ocean pool open daily from 7am for laps or wading.

Further south, the 1.8-kilometre Merewether to Bar Beach cliff-top track features native plant signage and whale-watching platforms active through July. Blackbutt Reserve trails near the city centre add 3 kilometres of bushland loops with free parking at the Carnley Avenue entrance.

Street art stops

Additional free stops include the Wickham laneway murals updated in 2024, the Queens Wharf boardwalk installations and the Honeysuckle waterfront sculptures along the harbour edge. These eight sites require no bookings and remain open during daylight hours.

Check the City of Newcastle website for any temporary closures before heading out, and start early to avoid peak parking pressure near the beaches.
