Newcastle's tech sector posted 1,240 new vacancies in June, a 12 percent rise from the same month last year, according to figures released by the North East Local Enterprise Partnership on 7 July.

The increase comes as national regulators tighten rules on data handling and autonomous systems, pushing employers here to seek staff who can manage compliance alongside core technical work. Job seekers who ignore these shifts risk missing roles that now bundle legal awareness with coding or engineering duties.

Where openings are appearing

Recruiters at Newcastle Helix report strong demand for data analysts and compliance officers, with several firms on the site expanding teams ahead of updated UK data-protection guidance expected in September. At the same time, Newcastle University’s Digital Institute has opened applications for its September cohort of short courses on AI ethics, aimed at mid-career professionals who want to stay competitive without leaving their current roles.

These programmes sit within a wider pattern of employers in the city centre and along the Quayside preferring candidates who already hold basic regulatory knowledge rather than training them from scratch.

Numbers that matter for applications

Median advertised salaries for senior software roles reached £52,000 last month, up from £48,500 in January, while entry-level positions in customer-data teams averaged £28,400. Professionals updating CVs should note that 68 percent of listings now mention familiarity with anti-spam or safety protocols as a desirable criterion.
