Six primary schools in the Newcastle area began offering weekly mindfulness classes in Term 2 of 2026, with sessions held in existing classrooms rather than dedicated spaces.

Student wellbeing data from the NSW Department of Education showed a 22 percent rise in reported anxiety referrals among Year 3 to Year 6 students between 2023 and 2025, prompting several local principals to trial short breathing and attention exercises before morning lessons.

Programs running in Newcastle suburbs

At Merewether Public School on Caldwell Street, teachers lead ten-minute guided sessions each Tuesday using audio tracks developed by the school’s welfare team, with students sitting on mats brought from the nearby ocean baths changing rooms. Further west, Speers Point Public School on The Esplanade runs a similar block on Thursdays that finishes in time for families to join the weekly parkrun loop around the lake. Both sites draw on the same set of free resources supplied by the Hunter Region mindfulness network, which also supplies printed prompt cards for use at home.

A third site, Newcastle East Public School on Tyrrell Street, started its own version in late June after staff attended a one-day training course held at the Newcastle Community Centre. The program there incorporates short walks along Bathers Way before the seated practice, weather permitting.

Costs and next steps for families

Each participating school charges a flat $25 per child for the full ten-week term to cover printed materials and occasional guest instructors, with the fee waived for families holding a current Health Care Card. Parents can register through the school’s existing parent portal or by calling the front office before the next term begins on 20 July. Some after-school extension classes are also listed on the City of Newcastle website under community programs, allowing siblings to attend together at the same low cost.

Families new to the area can test a single session at the free drop-in meditation circle held every Saturday morning at 9 am on the grass beside Merewether ocean baths, run by the same trainers who visit the schools.
