Journaling as a mindfulness tool: how to start
Newcastle locals are picking up notebooks to anchor daily mindfulness routines along the coast and in the valley.
How we reported this

More than 180 residents attended the first drop-in journaling sessions at Merewether Ocean Baths in June 2026.
The interest tracks rising demand for low-cost mental health practices in the Hunter region, where many residents balance shift work, family duties and long commutes along Bathers Way.
Participants often begin entries after a Saturday morning Speers Point parkrun or while seated on the benches at the northern end of the Bathers Way coastal walk near Nobbys Beach. Local libraries have added quiet journaling corners stocked with plain notebooks and pens, and the Hunter Community Centre now runs a weekly Thursday evening group that meets at its Hunter Street rooms.
A University of Newcastle survey released in May 2026 found 34 percent of adults in the Newcastle local government area reported daily stress levels above the national average, with those who journaled three or more times a week showing measurable drops in self-reported anxiety scores after four weeks.
Building the habit in local spots
Start with a single A5 notebook and a pen kept in a bag or car glovebox. Set a timer for five minutes after a regular activity such as the Speers Point parkrun finish or a walk along Bathers Way. Write whatever surfaces without editing, whether it is a list of tasks, a description of the ocean light at Merewether or a note about the taste of Hunter Valley peaches bought that morning at the farmers market.
Keep entries short at first. One sentence about the weather or one observation from the day is enough to begin the practice. Many Newcastle participants date each page and add a single line about how the body feels, which turns the notebook into a simple record rather than a performance.
Making it stick
Place the notebook beside the kettle or on the kitchen bench so it becomes part of the morning or evening routine. Review entries once a week on Sunday evenings for ten minutes, noting any patterns in mood or energy. Local stationery shops on Hunter Street sell plain notebooks for eight to twelve dollars, removing the need for special apps or expensive journals.
Residents who maintain the practice for a month often report clearer focus during the workday and better sleep. Those interested can join the next free session at Merewether Ocean Baths on 17 July or the Hunter Community Centre group on 18 July. Consult a local GP or counsellor for personalised support if stress persists.
