Mindfulness in schools: what local programs are available
Newcastle schools have rolled out targeted mindfulness sessions that draw on coastal walks and community spaces to help students manage daily pressures.
How we reported this

Newcastle primary and secondary schools launched three dedicated mindfulness programs in the first half of 2026, giving students regular guided sessions during the school week.
Interest has grown since families reported higher stress levels among children after the widespread mobile network failure in early July that disrupted emergency services and school communications across the Hunter region.
Local school initiatives
Merewether Primary School runs a twice-weekly program that takes students along the Bathers Way coastal walk for short breathing exercises before returning to the classroom. Lambton High School partners with the Hunter Valley Wellness Collective to deliver 30-minute sessions three afternoons a week in the library, using audio recordings developed by local instructors. Both programs began in February this year and remain free for enrolled students.
Teachers at Speers Point Public School added a Friday morning slot that incorporates elements of the nearby parkrun route, encouraging students to notice their surroundings without phones. The school reports that 180 students have joined at least one session since the term started.
Participation numbers and costs
Figures released by the NSW Department of Education in May showed that 620 Hunter students took part in school mindfulness activities during term one, up from 310 the previous year. Individual schools pay between $800 and $1,200 per term for facilitator training, with some covering the cost through parent fundraising at events held at Merewether Ocean Baths.
Parents who want to explore options can contact their child’s school directly or visit the Newcastle City Council community noticeboard at the library on Laman Street for printed schedules. Sessions remain open only to current students, and families are advised to speak with classroom teachers before signing up.
