Emerging talent voices and the next wave to watch

Newcastle City Council opened applications last week for its 2026 Emerging Voices Showcase, a program that will select 12 performers and writers for paid slots across three venues in August.

The move arrives as the Hunter region records a 28 percent rise in arts grants awarded to under-30 applicants compared with 2024 figures released by Create NSW in May. Venues report that audiences under 35 now make up 41 percent of ticket buyers for experimental work, a shift that has prompted programmers to adjust line-ups ahead of the spring festival season.

Venues already hosting the next wave

Readings and short performances began this month at The Press Book House on Hunter Street, where three selected poets will appear each Thursday evening through July. A separate strand moves to the 120-seat Studio at the Newcastle Civic Theatre on August 14, with entry priced at $18 for the full program or $8 per session. Organisers have also booked the courtyard at the Newcastle Museum for a free afternoon session on 22 August aimed at families and first-time attendees.

Local detail shows the program draws directly from the University of Newcastle's creative writing cohort and from open calls posted at Darby Street bookshops. Past participants include two writers who later received national publication deals after their 2024 appearances.
