Online Audio Growth Reshaping Newcastle Job and Talent Market
Newcastle employers report fresh demand for digital production skills as national online radio audiences climb.
How we reported this

Newcastle media outlets posted 47 audio production and content roles in the past month, up from 19 in the same period last year, according to Seek data compiled on 10 July 2026.
The shift follows a national surge in online radio listening that began accelerating after 2024, when fixed-line broadband costs fell and smartphone penetration in regional centres passed 92 percent. Local firms now compete for producers, sound engineers and social-media hosts who can run 24-hour streams without traditional transmitter licences.
Two Newcastle organisations driving the change are the University of Newcastle’s media lab on Honeysuckle Drive and the community station 2NUR-FM based in the CBD’s Civic Theatre precinct. Both have expanded short-course training since March 2026 to meet employer requests for graduates who already know streaming software and audience analytics.
Skills demand on Hunter Street
Along Hunter Street, three new digital-first studios opened between February and June this year, each advertising salaries starting at $78,000 for junior producers. One studio on the corner of Hunter and Perkins streets specialises in live music streams aimed at shift workers in the Port of Newcastle.
Employers say the talent pool remains thin. The Newcastle Business Chamber’s June workforce survey found 61 percent of member firms in content and marketing reported unfilled audio roles lasting longer than eight weeks.
Next steps for job seekers
Workers looking to move into the sector should check listings on the University of Newcastle careers portal and the 2NUR-FM website every Monday morning, when most new contracts are posted. Local TAFE campuses at Tighes Hill are also adding weekend micro-credentials in audio editing that start in August 2026 at a cost of $420.
Those who complete the short courses report interviews within three weeks, according to chamber records.
